Fabric Portraits
These portraits are made entirely of fabric and thread. Each piece of fabric is painstakingly chosen, cut and put into place and then sewn using a variable zig-zag stitch. I use fabrics just as a painter uses different colors of paint.
I have always loved examining faces and I have always loved fabric. When I was a little girl, my grandmother owned a dress shop and I used to love playing with the scraps of fabric in the back of the shop. As an adult, I have been blessed to be able to combine two of my favorite things.
For years I made quilts and then moved onto making portraits with hand applique. I could not get the detail I was looking for until I used the machine to sew down the raw edges.
